Designated landscapes across Wales have been busy rolling out programmes to take action on climate change, nature recovery, sustainable tourism and community support.
The three year programmes, supported by the Sustainable Landscapes Sustainable Places Fund (SLSP Fund), are in place across the eight designated landscapes of Wales and include three collaborative programmes, with the designated landscapes working together.
The three collaborative programmes are:
An all Wales Dark Skies project;
Landscape linked educational resources for Wales;
A Traditional field boundaries programme for Welsh Designated Landscapes
All of the SLSP funded programmes are linked to Welsh Government priorities and the statutory purposes and key responsibilities of the AONBs and National Park Authorities:
- Promoting Biodiversity and nature recovery – programmes here include developing tree nurseries to support planting of native trees, improving connectivity and resilience of species and habitats, and restoring and protecting peatland.
- Accelerating Decarbonisation – by fitting lighting to reduce energy use and help our nocturnal wildlife, supporting communities to take action, supporting appropriate renewable energy, and managing land for carbon.
- Supporting Resilient and Green communities – supporting more people to get out and enjoy landscapes, developing community allotment spaces and providing sustainable community facilities.
- Delivering Sustainable tourism – programmes will improve and protect valued cultural and heritage assets, improve visitor facilities and information, and improve footpaths and access to landscapes.
