Adventure awaits at Breakwater Country Park
In Anglesey AONB the Wales Coast Path gateway site of Breakwater Country Park has received funding to design, create and install a new adventure playground along with access improvements to the site.
The project to develop this new facility in Anglesey AONB has been supported by the Sustainable Landscapes Sustainable Places Fund administered through the Welsh Government and Tirweddau Cymru Landscapes Wales.
Breakwater Country Park, near the town of Holyhead is a very popular destination for the local population and visitors, receiving over 125,000 visits each year. The Country Park has previously lacked an adventure play area for children to learn, explore and challenge themselves.
The close proximity to the town of Holyhead and neighbouring communities, ferry port, train terminal and the A55 Expressway makes it a desirable location to visit and is one of the primary gateways to the wider coast and countryside of northern Holy Island along the Wales Coast Path. The Country Park covers an area of over 40 hectares and incorporates the Wales Coast Path, which leads to Anglesey’s highest point, Holyhead Mountain and further on to South Stack.
There are so many benefits to be gained from outdoor play and changes at this site has given people from the local community a reason to spend more time in the area, and feel more connected to the natural surroundings.
The adventure play area also has a café run as a social enterprise, a North Wales Wildlife Trust [NWWT] kiosk, toilets, ample parking and an Information Centre nearby. With more people staying longer in the AONB, the local businesses have benefitted from having more customers.
The Sustainable Landscapes Sustainable Places SLSP fund is a programme of capital investment across Wales’s eight Designated Landscapes, enabling them to contribute to key Welsh Government objectives around promoting biodiversity and nature recovery, accelerating decarbonisation, supporting resilient and green communities and delivering sustainable tourism.
