Managing land for nature and climate
A land management project taking action on the joint nature and climate emergencies has been supported by the Sustainable Landscapes Sustainable Places Fund through the Welsh Government and Landscapes Wales.
Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority has received funding to purchase and manage land for carbon sequestration. Around 30 acres of coastal land at Trefin, previously used as organic pasture for grazing has been bought and will be restored to improve biodiversity and contribute to decarbonisation through carbon sequestration.
The Park Authority normally owns or leases the minimum amount of estate needed to delivery on its purposes. However, taking action to help tackle climate change and restore nature is a key target for the National Park and this land purchase has enabled the site to be managed in perpetuity for biodiversity and carbon sequestration with positive benefits for current and future generations.
The land borders the village of Trefin, which is a great coastal location with high landscape value and scope for access, citizen science and education resource, all of which will be explored. The project will also help improve access, instead of a narrow lane leading out to the cliff land (owned by the Park Authority), a large open area of coastal belt can be opened up. There is also potential for community volunteering work as the site develops.
It is hoped that the habitat restoration work at Trefin will not only improve biodiversity but also make a significant contribution to taking action on climate change.
