Making Llŷn AONB more accessible for all
The Llŷn AONB will see renewed and improved facilities thanks to support from the Sustainable Landscapes Sustainable Places Fund administered through the Welsh Government and Tirweddau Cymru Landscapes Wales.
One site chosen for improvement is Trefor beach and quay, an interesting historical site with links to the fishing and granite quarrying on the nearby mountain industries. This work will improve the site and make it far more attractive to local people and visitors, bringing environmental, economic and community benefits to the area.
The project involves the following work:
- resurfacing an informal car park near the Quay
- resurfacing the site of the old Quay itself
- painting railings on the Quay and placing new benches
- creating a new path from the car park to the beach
- small environmental improvements
The Quay was developed as a result of the nearby granite quarry – this was a significant quarry and stones were exported to all corners of the globe. There was also a modest fishing industry in Trefor and fishing continues to be an important activity locally. This work will involve collaboration with the community council.
Bleddyn Prys Jones, Llŷn AONB Officer said: “Trefor Quay and the beach are popular places to visit there is an opportunity to increase the site’s appeal and create new opportunities. The site is on the north coast of Llŷn where there are magnificent views from the site and the Wales Coast Path is nearby. It is anticipated there will be additional tourism within the UK following the pandemic and there will be a real need for satisfactory infrastructure for local people and visitors alike.”
The Sustainable Landscapes Sustainable Places SLSP fund is a programme of capital investment across Wales’s eight Designated Landscapes, enabling them to contribute to key Welsh Government objectives around promoting biodiversity and nature recovery, accelerating decarbonisation, supporting resilient and green communities and delivering sustainable tourism.
