The Sustainable Landscapes, Sustainable Places programme of capital investment across Wales’ eight Designated Landscapes continues to ensure contribution to key Welsh Government objectives within the Programme for Government; to plan more strategically and deliver longer term programmes with stronger partnerships.
Within the programme there are four main themes, linked to the statutory purposes and the key responsibilities of the National Park Authorities and National Landscapes and Welsh Government priorities:
Promoting biodiversity and nature recovery – including projects that improve the connectivity and resilience of ecosystems in designated areas, making use of nature based solutions to mitigate against the impacts of climate change.
Accelerating decarbonisation – through the decarbonisation of activity and assets towards a net zero carbon goal. The operation of community-focused schemes to enable decarbonisation locally including installing appropriate renewable energy capture, and carbon sequestration schemes in the landscape.
Supporting resilient and green communities – enabling designated landscape bodies to deliver social, environmental, cultural or economic outcomes and improvements for their communities.
Delivering sustainable tourism – mitigating the negative impacts of over-tourism, by upgrading visitor facilities and infrastructure where local priorities and sensitivities support this through environmentally sensitive, resilient and durable methods. These interventions work towards helping landscapes recover from and adapt to changing tourism patterns during and following Covid-19; whilst improving and protecting valued cultural and heritage assets.
