A Policy Framework for Nature, Culture, Communities, and Future Generations
As Wales approaches the 2026 Senedd Election, Tirweddau Cymru is calling on all political parties to recognise the essential role of Designated Landscapes in delivering environmental, cultural, social, and economic outcomes for the nation.
Wales’ National Parks and National Landscapes (previously known as AONBs) cover 25% of Wales and are not solely scenic or recreational spaces. They are critical landscapes that support nature, rural economies, water supplies, cultural identity—including the Welsh language—and climate resilience. This document sets out a clear, collaborative agenda for policy alignment and investment in these vital areas.
We advocate a partnership approach. As key stakeholders within these landscapes, with a statutory responsibility towards them, we are ready to lead in delivering place-based, future-focused action, supported by Welsh Government. The majority of land in Designated Landscapes is privately owned, so everything we do is in collaboration with the local communities management bodies, and land managers.
Tirweddau Cymru Landscapes Wales is a Partnership of the Designated Landscape management bodies, comprising the teams for the five designated Areas of Outstanding National Beauty now know as National Landscapes: Anglesey, Clwydian Range and Dee Valley, Llŷn, Gower and Wye Valley; and the managing authorities of the three National Parks: Bannau Brycheiniog, Eryri and Pembrokeshire Coast, supported by Welsh Government and Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
